Coatings Vs. Paint

Don't confuse Coatings for Paint

Roof coatings are applied by us at a rate of 2 gallons per 100 sq. ft. and dry at 18-20 mils whereas paints are usually applied at a rate of 1 gallon per 400 sq. ft. and dry at 3 mils or less. All our coatings have a lifespan of up to 20 years or more. Typical paint lifespan is well under 5 years.

Roof paints do not have the strength, longevity, protection, reflectivity, weatherability, and waterproofing properties of a roof coating.
Lots of people refer to roof coating as roof paint, when in fact, coating and paint are very different products. Roof paint cannot withstand the typical elements a roof endures from the weather. Paint becomes brittle and will chip, peel, and crack usually within a season. A roof paint does not protect your roof from the sun’s heat by reflecting the sun’s UV rays away from the building or provide waterproofing the way a roof coating does. It was thought that paint would provide energy savings being that they are often times white, however; because white roof paint cannot reflect the heat away the way a coating does, it does not add value to saving energy usage or costs the way a roof coating can. Roof coatings provide a thermal barrier as well as a water barrier for your roof which is something that paint simply cannot do. All of our coatings are solvent based, unlike most roof paints, which are water based and will chalk and wear off at a rate of 1 mil per year which equates to the paint chalking off in around 4 years. Our high solid solvent based roof coatings have minimal chalking of less than 1 mil per 5 years. Most roof paints will actually attract mold growth in a short period of time, whereas all our roof coatings have biocides in the formulas to help prevent mold and algae growth.

Polymer roof coating benefits

Polymer roof coating is the top of the line as far as roof coatings are concerned. Our polymer roof coating is a bright white high solid solvent based roof coating.   It forms a 18-32 mil thick waterproof monolithic coating on your roof. Polymer roof coating stops rust and mold growth. Our polymer roof coating has a stretch rate of 700% and has excellent durability for ponding water situations something water based coatings cannot offer.

HDPE Fibered Aluminum Coating

Our HDPE fiber based aluminum has the highest aluminum content in the industry at 3 lbs. of aluminum PER FINISHED GALLON for longevity. Whereas most manufacturers put in 1/2-1 lb. per finished gallon leading to coating failure and a dull finish. We use HDPE plastic fiber in our fiber based aluminum coating for strength, durability and flexibility whereas the rest of the industry uses cellulose wood “fiber”and is mostly used to thicken up thinned down coatings and offers no strength or flexibility benefits at all. HDPE fiber cost over 10 times the amount of cellulose fiber but it is a area that should not be ignored for quality and longevity reasons. Our HDPE fiber based aluminum is a great product for previously painted aluminum surfaces or for agricultural barns and corn bins. It has a life span of well over 10 years.

Rubberized aluminum roof coating benefits

Our premium rubberized aluminum has the highest aluminum content in the industry at 3 lbs. of aluminum PER FINISHED GALLON for longevity. Whereas most manufacturers put in 1/2-1 lb. per finished gallon leading to coating failure and a dull finish. Our rubberized aluminum has more polymer per gallon than any other manufacturer giving it a 400% stretch rate. Rubberized aluminum is a great product for previously painted aluminum surfaces or for agricultural barns and corn bins.

At J&K Roof coating we ONLY use American sourced chemicals for manufacturing all of our roof coating products. We refuse to use off shore sourced chemicals. All our products are manufactured by one person for quality control purposes. Our fibered aluminum is manufactured with HDPE plastic fibers. Whereas all our competitors use cellulose wood as “fiber” in their fibered aluminum coatings, which attracts mold and becomes brittle when cured. Our fibered aluminum with HDPE stays flexible longer preventing cracks and coating delamination. We are the only manufacturer to use HDPE in a fibered aluminum product industry wide.
